A Free Self-Defense Workshop Saturday, May 14

Don’t become a crime statistic! Attend “The Best Defense,” a free self-defense workshop brought to you by the Virginia Beach Police Department and Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation. Participants will increase awareness of the environment, learn about crime prevention, obtain personal safety tips, and learn how to escape from potentially dangerous situations. Geared for those ages 12 & up, this self-defense workshop features simple skills that participants will practice under the supervision of Virginia Beach Police Department instructors.

All participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and no jewelry. Those under age 16 must participate with a parent or guardian. Please note that for this free workshop, a membership card is not required. Register as soon as possible as this is a very popular workshop. Registration will be accepted until May 7, 2011. You may register by calling any Virginia Beach Recreation Center. If you are a recreation center member and know your account number and PIN, you may register online at http://ezreg.vbgov.com for class # 101284.

Sea turtle cold stunning season is here!

Here is an important message I found on the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Facebook page. 

Sea turtle cold stunning season is here! As temperatures drop, sea turtles that are still in the area may go into a coma and strand. If not found in time, this condition can kill them. Many of these animals are so cold that it's hard to tell if they are alive or dead so it is very important to report them right away. Rehab facilities from Massachusetts to North Carolina are experiencing high numbers of cold stunned sea turtles this year. 

If you find a stranded sea turtle on the beach, dead or alive, please call the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team right away at 757-437-6159.

Pugsley was a past cold stun patient at the Stranding Center.

Calling all Egg-straordinary Engineers for the
8th Annual Egg Drop Contest

The Virginia Air & Space Center's 8th Annual Egg Drop Contest features students
from Hampton Roads' schools competing in a test of engineering prowess.
Students are challenged to design the lightest possible container to hold a fresh egg
that when dropped from the 2nd floor of the Virginia Air & Space Center will prevent
the egg from cracking or breaking.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners.

February 19, 2011 - 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Participants are free! Guests are $3.
